Roads and Traffic
Road and Trail Conditions
Tanzania’s roads present a mix of challenges and thrills, ranging from smooth tarmac to rugged clay and gravel tracks. Some trails feature gradients exceeding 15%, adding an extra layer of adventure to your journey. You might even encounter a broken bridge or cross a river, enhancing the excitement and authenticity of your ride.
Our routes are carefully designed to avoid busy tarmac roads whenever possible. Not only does this keep you safer from Tanzania's unpredictable traffic, but it also allows you to enjoy the serenity and beauty of off-road trails. Gravel paths and single tracks offer a more immersive and enjoyable way to connect with the natural world around you.
Stay Safe and Informed
In Tanzania, traffic follows the left-hand side of the road, and the “law of the jungle” often applies. As a cyclist, vigilance is key to navigating local traffic conditions safely. Before embarking on your journey, you'll be required to sign an Accident Release and Waiver of Liability, ensuring that everyone is prepared and informed for their adventure.

Bicycles and cycling equipement
We provide bicycles and cycling equipment to enhance your outdoor adventures. Choose from our range of refurbished mountain bikes in various sizes, each designed to deliver a smooth and reliable ride. If your size isn’t available, we can assist in hiring a suitable MTB from trusted local providers.
What’s Included?
Every bike rental comes complete with essential accessories:
- Helmets for your safety
- A handy drinking bottle to keep you hydrated
- A tyre repair kit for those unexpected moments
For an extra layer of convenience, we also offer cycling shorts, jerseys, and navigation equipment for unguided day trips.
Planning a Multi-Day Tour?
For longer adventures, like the iconic Tour de Kilimanjaro Classic, we recommend bringing your own gravel mountain bike for maximum comfort. Prefer to use one of our bikes? No problem! Simply complete a SizeMyBike form, sent to you after a booking is made, and we'll ensure your bike is perfectly tailored to your needs.

Health and Safety
Safety First
Tanzania is a warm and welcoming country, known for its friendly people and incredible scenery. While it’s generally safe, it’s important to exercise common sense during your journey:
- Always keep your belongings secure.
- Stay with your guide at all times to navigate unfamiliar areas safely.
- Carry a mobile phone for emergencies to ensure peace of mind throughout your trip.
Health and Fitness Requirements
Cycling in Tanzania offers a unique blend of challenge and reward. Here’s what you need to know:
- Climate Variations: Prepare for diverse conditions, from the hot plains (38-40°C) to cooler altitudes like the Tour de Kilimanjaro Classic, where temperatures can drop to 10°C at 2,100 meters.
- Weather Conditions: While the weather is typically dry, tropical downpours can occur, so pack accordingly.
- Challenging Terrain: Some trails include steep ascents and descents, requiring good health and stamina.
We welcome adventurers of all ages, but we recommend participants be between 18 and 70 years old for safety and endurance reasons.
Medical Preparation
Before embarking on your Ecojoy cycling adventure, consult your doctor:
- Ensure you are fit for the physical demands of the tour.
- Discuss vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis if necessary.
Your health and safety are our top priorities. By taking these precautions, you’ll be ready to enjoy the journey of a lifetime.
Prices
At Ecojoy, we pride ourselves on offering some of the most affordable prices for tours and adventures in Africa. You might be wondering why our prices are so affordable compared to others online. Let us explain:
Our prices are based solely on real costs, a.o. covering taxes, vehicle use, and fair wages for the people we hire. As a non-profit organization, we do not include a profit margin. Apart from allocating funds for the depreciation of buildings and equipment, every euro you spend goes directly back into supporting Tanzania.
Any surplus funds, after covering operating costs and maintenance, are used to provide scholarships. This means your investment stays within the country, benefiting local communities and individuals directly.
By joining us on this adventure, you’re not only embarking on an unforgettable experience but also making a meaningful difference. Your journey with us supports EcoJoy’s mission to uplift lives, strengthen communities, and protect the local ecosystem in Tanzania.
